1888-01-18WANTED, A RAILWAY FROM ARNPRIOR TO OTTAWA THROUGH THE CARP. Dr. George H. Groves of Carp says a preliminary survey is being made by Mr. Bell, C.E. of Almonte, for a short line railway between Ottawa and Arnprior, hoped to be pushed through by the Canada Atlantic railway as a feeder to their line, running from the Union Station at Ottawa to Graham's Bay, then to Arnprior via March Corners, Carp, Kinburn and Moore's Corners, within half a mile of Galetta -- about thirty miles, estimated at $15,000 a mile. Arnprior's lumber mills (McLachlin Bros., Gillies & Co.) currently pay the C.P.R. $300,000 a year for transport and would benefit from the competition; Arnprior offers a $20,000 bonus and McLachlin Bros. offer to build a $20,000 bridge across the Madawaska if the road goes ahead. The road would likely continue on to Renfrew, connecting there with the Kingston & Pembroke. Ottawa Journal 1888-01-18(Transcribed by Colin J. Churcher, 'Local Railway I...)
1888-01-23THE PROPOSED SHORT LINE TO ARNPRIOR. An editorial urging support for the proposed Ottawa and Arnprior railway, noting it would bring the output of the Arnprior lumber mills directly onto the Canada Atlantic railway, and that the Canada Atlantic 'has been of sufficient value to the city and shown itself to possess sufficient liberality and enterprise to entitle it to our good wishes'. The road, estimated at half a million dollars, would eventually extend beyond Arnprior to Renfrew to connect with the Kingston and Pembroke road. Ottawa Journal 1888-01-23(Transcribed by Colin J. Churcher, 'Local Railway I...)
