1898-03-21≥The Canada Atlantic express from Ottawa, due here at 10.15 p.m., steamed into the Bonaventure station last evening with the locomotive head light, the steam gauge and the postal, baggage and express car brilliantly lighted with acetylene gas. ... Locomotive No. 26, in charge of Engineer Robert Orr, had only two hours in the Ottawa yard to be prepared for the trip. ... the first express train locomotive with an acetylene gas headlight in America. ... Under the new system, invented by Mr. Andrew Holland, of Holland Bros.; Senate reporters, the gas is generated under low pressure ... Mr. Armstrong, controller of railway mail service, readily gave permission to the Canada Atlantic Railway Company to try the experiment in the postal car. (As reported by 21 March 1898; the source dates the event only relatively.)
Dateline Montreal; 'last evening' is relative to the issue of 1898-03-22. Locomotive 'No. 26' is not matched to a site entity.
