1883-09-291883-09-29 The Canada Atlantic Railway CompanyInvited by the manager of the Canada Atlantic Railway to ride from Montreal to Ottawa, said to be shorter than the C.P.R. route from Hochelaga, the paper noted the line was already favorably known to the Quebec press and recommended by members who had ridden it. Quoting the Montreal Witness: while Sir Henry Tyler had thought ten hours between Toronto and Montreal fast enough, D.C. Linsley, manager of the Canada Atlantic, had shown the popularity of fast trains -- in a recently published comparison of relative railway speeds, Canada took the lead on the continent. The Canada Atlantic covered the roughly 78.4 miles between Coteau and Ottawa in one hour thirty-four minutes with three stops, an average of fifty miles an hour, and eleven miles between Eastman's Springs and South Indian at a mile a minute by the fast express -- built, it appeared, especially for fast service, and expected to work a revolution in Ottawa-New York business once extended to its southern terminus near Rouses Point. Passenger traffic between Ottawa and Montreal had increased markedly since the Canada Atlantic began operating and its competitor the Canadian Pacific also increased speed.
