| 1909-05-13 | 1909-05-13 | Ottawa Central Station | A civic building permit for the erection of a power station and baggage annex has been taken out by the GTR at Ottawa. Work was commenced on the annex some days ago. Of the $50,000 to be expended as stated in the permit, from $10,000 to $12,000 probably will be used for relaying the tracks and work required in the yards. Transcribed by Colin J. | 1910-07-21 | 1910-07-19 | Rockland Branch | An attempt to wreck the G.T.R. pay car, due here last night, was made between 6 and 7 o'clock, about three miles from the village on the Rockland branch. At a concession crossing some miscreant tore up the crossing in broad daylight and laid planks across the rails. The engineer of the pay car engine noticed the obstruction and rapidly threw on the brakes; the car was going slow and nothing serious happened. The people here feel that it is unfortunate that this attempt at wrecking should occur on the eve of the strike; citizens generally repudiate the thought that railway employees had anything to do with it, but think some miscreant took advantage of the occasion to throw suspicion on the railway men. | 1911-07-13 | 1911-07-07 | Maxville | The little town of Maxville on the Grand Trunk Railway in Glengarry County was almost destroyed by fire on Wednesday night, with the loss in the neighbourhood of $100,000 and less than half that amount of insurance. The chief losses were: Smiley & Robertson, sash and door factory, saw mill and lumber yard, $30,000; J.W. Smiley, residence and granary, $7,000; W.H. Dwyer & Co. Ltd., Ottawa, two granaries, $3,000; R. Woodroffe, residence, $2,000; D. Duparent, residence, $1,500; D. McMillan, stables, $1,500; Grand Trunk Railway Company station platforms, five box cars loaded with pressed hay, rails etc., $20,000; A.J. McEwen, logs, $1,200. Assistance was sent from Ottawa but the fire was under control when it arrived. The fire broke out in Smiley and Robertson's factory about 9 p.m. from some unknown cause, and quickly spread to surrounding buildings. Transcribed by Colin J. | 1913-07-24 | 1913-07-24 | Arnprior | The other evening Samuel Spence was the means of saving a boy's life. The boy, the twelve year old son of Mr. John McGonigal, had his thumb caught in a 'D' rail operated in the diamond at the intersection of the GTR and the CPR tracks. A through freight on the GTR was coming along just as Mr. Spence managed to have it stopped, while another boy informed the signalman of McGonigal's predicament and had the switch opened. The thumb was much flattened and a physician had to be summoned. Transcribed by Colin J.
