1888-04-25 The Canada Atlantic Railway CompanyA SHARP GAME: THE CANADA ATLANTIC VS. COAL CARTAGE CO. Percy R. Todd, general freight and passenger agent of the Canada Atlantic, told the Parliamentary Combines Committee how, having failed for years to get a share of Ottawa's coal freight, the company arranged for the Rathbun Forwarding Company of Deseronto to send an agent, J.C. Carter, to sell coal brought in over the Canada Atlantic. The threat of competition brought Ottawa coal dealers to agree to buy 7,000 tons over the C.A.R. -- but the Delaware & Hudson railway then refused, on a pretext, to quote Carter rates, which Todd suspected was engineered by the Ottawa coal men. The Canada Atlantic and Rathbuns instead contracted with the Pennsylvania Coal Co. for coal delivered by water at Rouses Point, of which the C.A.R. hauled a portion free to offset losses; a further 500 tons came via the Canadian Pacific from a Brockville surplus. This year the company have arranged their own retail coal grounds, opened a Rathbun office in Ottawa, and expect an independent dealer besides, with an agreement to charge the same freight rate to all parties and match any local dealer's claimed price advantage dollar for dollar -- 'the sole object of the Canada Atlantic is to secure a fair share of the coal freight coming into Ottawa.'Ottawa Journal 1888-04-25(Testimony reported at length; condensed here to it...)
1888-05-02 The Canada Atlantic Railway CompanyThe Canada Atlantic Railway Company have completed arrangements by which they can take lumber shipped from Ottawa to New York by rail to Rouse's Point and thence by barge to Albany and New York -- a shorter route than by water to Sorel and the Richelieu River to Lake Champlain. The new rates are actually lower than the all-water route, and the lumber is carried faster; the company expect a rushing business that summer. The arrangement will chiefly affect owners of American vessels carrying the transitory trade, not local forwarders under existing long-term contracts.Ottawa Journal 1888-05-02(Transcribed by Colin J. 1888-06-04 The Canada Atlantic Railway CompanyThe Canadian Pacific Railway company find the working of the North Shore line too expensive for the receipts it gives them owing to the lively competition of the Canada Atlantic. The line has long been coveted by the G.T.R. people, who are anxious to reach the capital to tap the lumber shipping trade but have been unable to secure it on account of the high price asked by the Canada Atlantic company. The Grand Trunk people have obtained control of two charters, one from Dr. Bergin's company and the other from the Vaudreuil & Ottawa Co., held as a menace to the Canada Atlantic if it does not come down on price. 1888-07-06 South IndianThe line of the Canada Atlantic Railway was blocked near South Indian owing to fire raging on each side and across the track, the rails having coiled up with the intensity of the heat; it was anticipated the men would relay the 100 yards or so of burnt line overnight in time for the first train. (It was about this time the previous year that this line was troubled by fire near Bearbrook and a serious accident narrowly averted.) The company lost no time repairing the damage: sixty sectionmen were put to work, and the afternoon Montreal express, which had stopped at Casselman overnight, was able to get through and reached Ottawa at 5 a.m. The passengers spoke highly of the company's attention.Ottawa Citizen 1888-07-06(Includes a July 7 follow-up paragraph in the same ...)

1888-08 The Canada Atlantic Railway CompanyWilliam H. Taylor recalled that in August 1888 he began running as a locomotive fireman on the Canada Atlantic: "Firemen in those days had to clean their own engines inside and out. They had to crawl under the engines and rake the cinders out of the ashpan with a hoe", four or five times between Ottawa and Montreal; "Engines in those days had no lubricators and had to be oiled by hand. That is why we firemen were called 'tallow-pots.'" The wood-burning engines carried a wood car behind the tender, which usually gave out before the train had gone thirty miles, and every member of the crew helped reload from piles carted by farmers. He first ran out of Ottawa to Coteau Junction with Phil Roy at the controls.Ottawa Citizen 1937-07-31(Transcribed by Colin J. Churcher in 'Local Railway...)

1888-08-02 Chaudiere BranchLocomotives 5 and 6 of the C.A.R. are engaged daily in drawing some 110 car loads of gravel from Booth's siding to the Chaudiere extension. A monster steam shovel with a capacity of nearly two cubic yards a dip loads a train of six self-dumping cars in short order. After the siding is exhausted, gravel will be taken from Hurdman's Cut and Roxboro pit. Ballasting the extension, which now reaches to Bridge street, will probably take till the fall to complete.Ottawa Free Press 1888-08-02(Transcribed by Colin J. Churcher, 'Local Railway I...)

1888-08-17 Chaudiere BranchA glance around Britannia terrace shows that the residents are presently suffering somewhat severely from the construction of the C.A.R. Chaudiere extension -- as Ald. Hutchison of the Board of Works pointed out, it is impossible, or next to it, for them to reach their yards with loads of coal or wood. Still, the construction of this line will, in time, greatly enhance the value of property in this neighborhood.Ottawa Free Press 1888-08-17(Transcribed by Colin J. Churcher, 'Local Railway I...)

1888-09-11 Elgin StreetThe Canada Atlantic Railway company have concluded that their passenger terminus can be placed further up Elgin street with advantage. Engineer G.A. Mountain has completed plans for a new passenger station on the corner of Lewis and Elgin streets. Before the line was built, the company had purchased a block of land from the Stewart estate extending from the present station to the corner of Lewis street, intending to build there -- a quarter mile nearer the city centre -- but when the city refused to pay the $110,000 bonus the company claimed, it refused to enter the city and built its present station instead. Now that the city limits have been extended to take in the present station, the company plans to bring its passenger depot nearer the centre, with construction of the new station and approach lines from the Rideau canal bridge to begin the following spring. The company hopes to make the new depot a union depot, with the Vaudreuil and Ottawa road and the Gatineau Valley company arranged to run into it, and expects the C.P.R. to eventually follow suit. The old Elgin street depot would become a freight office; the Chaudiere would remain the road's proper terminus for the present.Ottawa Journal 1888-09-11(Transcribed by Colin J. 1888-09-17 Chaudiere BranchThe completion of the Canada Atlantic Railway Chaudiere extension is now almost accomplished, the switches laid over the last few weeks having been completed Saturday and made ready for traffic. During the night and to noon today, fully one hundred freight cars had been shunted from the yards on Elgin street over the new line to the Chaudiere, where they were being loaded with lumber and other materials. J.R. Booth found use for fully fifty box cars, shipping to Burlington, Vermont and other New England points. The Eddy Manufacturing Company also used the new branch, shipping pails, tubs and similar goods, which previously had to be conveyed from Hull across to the Depot on Elgin street. A space forty feet wide is planked with 3-inch boards between the switches throughout the yard.Ottawa Free Press 1888-09-17(Transcribed by Colin J. Another new platform is being put down at the extension. A new shunting engine, a hard coal burner, will shortly arrive for use at the new Chaudiere yards. The extension into the lumber piling grounds is proving a great convenience and an unlooked-for economy: the Eddy Manufacturing Company are now able to load three additional cars per day with the same force of men, and Messrs. 1888-10-24 Chaudiere BranchThe Canada Atlantic extension has given no end of satisfaction to the lumbermen. There are now three yards along the line, the object being to take green lumber from the mills to yards about a mile and a half distant to dry for shipment direct to its destination in the States, doing away with carting and extra handling, and drying faster than in the damp atmosphere of the Chaudiere. During the last week 942 carloads of lumber were taken from the end of the extension to the track at Crown Acre and piled in these new grounds.Ottawa Citizen 1888-10-24(Transcribed by Colin J.
